ROBERT ROSEN

This is the main page of Dr. Robert Rosen's area of the Rosen Enterprises web-site. Robert Rosen's body of work was extensive and richly varied. The work he is most known for is his scientific writing and the group of theoretical ideas he developed and called "Complexity". (Complexity, in the Rosennean sense, has a very specific definition.) His papers and books will be available for purchase here (Pricing page, coming soon). All the out of print books and unpublished work is being published and/or re-published. Some of these works are available already and I am taking orders for others, from those who are interested. Please e-mail me for details or information and I can give you an update: (judithrosen@earthlink.net).

In January, 2005, I launched an Internet Science Journal, called "BioTheory". This is the closest approximation I can achieve to a vision my father had for a means to free himself from Academia and all the attendant politics/intrigue/ugliness that interfered with doing real work in science. His notes for what BioTheory was intended to be can be found here: BioTheory rough notes (R.Rosen).

There is also a substantial body of artistic work, done by Robert Rosen throughout his life. Oil paintings and drawings of landscapes, portraits, and nudes are also plentiful. Prints of these works will be available for purchase here. (The originals must stay in the collection.) Please enjoy thumbnail versions of a selection of his work [when they finally become available: we are under construction at the moment!] and if there is something you would like to see that isn't included, or if you have questions, e-mail me.

Robert Rosen's entire reference library is intact and looking for a "home". Both temporary quarters and permanent digs are being considered. If you know of a private individual or institution which is in a position to acquire this library, please get in touch. It is an EXTENSIVE collection. There are hundreds of books, scores of scientific journal collections, articles, and so forth. This was his own personal library, stocked with material he acquired over a lifetime of reading, researching, and developing a good working home office. When he retired from Academia, his university office library joined the contents of his home library, so this is the full collection, in its entirety. Copies of all of his own works can be included, as negotiated. The reference library is currently being inventoried and that list will be made available here, regardless of where the reference library ends up, for anyone who finds the information to be of value.

In addition to his scientific work, Robert Rosen wrote a small number of short science-fiction stories as well. These were included in Judith Rosen's literary magazine, "The Rosen Chronicles".

Periodically, some of Robert Rosen's work will be made available to read or copy, free of charge. Click on the link below to see what is currently offerred:

Lastly, there is an enormous archive of photographs, taken by Robert Rosen on his travels throughout the world over his career. Many of these are fascinating, unusual, and/or quite beautiful. Copies of these photographs will be available as well. Thumbnail versions of as many as possible will be displayed here but the vast number of pictures makes display of all impossible. Once they are fully inventoried, categories will be listed here so that those interested may inquire further.

On A Personal Note...

The loss of Robert Rosen (in late December, 1998) to complications from Type I Diabetes was a terrible blow to his family. He was, to us, a lovable, interesting, and fun man. But to science and scientists, Robert Rosen was something else. His admirers continue to praise the work he created and his detractors continue, even now, to try and come up with suitable insults and epithets, but his work continues to live on and positively affect the course of science and human knowledge. He left his work to me when he died, presumably because, out of a large group of people who loved the man, I was the only one who also understood HIS love for the work. What ever I can do to help the ideas continue, and ensure that they are accurately represented, I will surely do.

However, I also knew that there was so much more to that mind than just the work. It is hoped that by including information and my insight into other aspects of my father's life, his personality, his integrity, his wit, and his sense of humor, that Robert Rosen's legacy-- as history unfolds-- will be a more well-rounded one than just about his contributions to science.

His mind, and his personality, had enormous range in life.
